Quality Leadership Characteristics

Sometimes its hard to explain what leadership characteristics make an effective leader.  Knowing a great leader is one thing.  Becoming one yourself is important in planning to be successful in your personal and business life.

Each of us has different values and beliefs on what we think makes up a good leader.

If you grew up in a relaxed situation, your beliefs as a leader will be different than if you grew up in a strict environment.  Your personality contributes to how you lead others in different situations as well.

On the same note, how you lead depends on the personality of the followers.  Leading a group of children is far different than leading a group within a corporation.

Each situation relies on different skills to influence your followers.  But, they both require good leadership characteristics to be successful.

To be a leader you must have a follower.  Both of you have to agree who will be leading and who will be following.  At the same time, you both need to live up to the expectations of the other.

How do you know if you're a good leader?

Leadership Characteristics

You will start by building a good foundation.  In order to do this you will need to have some common leadership characteristics.  Depending on your situation, you might not have all of these characteristics at first.  These qualities will develop over time with planning and practice.

If you're looking to see if you can be a true leader, there are some basics to being a strong leader.  You will need to have good, strong qualities such as drive, energy, determination and self-discipline.  You go after what you want and people will follow you

If you have weak characteristics such as indecisiveness, lack of motivation and afraid of the unknown, then no one will follow you. But, you can change this with a strong work ethic, successful planning and plenty of practice over time.

That's why it's important to be ethical with good beliefs and convictions.  There are many strong leaders with unethical behavior such as Adolf Hitler.

But what qualities in a leader do most people value? Before anyone will follow you, you must measure up in their eyes to these characteristics.

Top Leadership Characteristics

Honesty - A leader must be ethical and have good integrity.  People need to trust you.  You also need to trust yourself, know what you want to do and are willing to sacrifice some things to get there.

Looking forward - You need to know where you want to go and have a vision of the future.  Your vision also needs to include what your followers want as well.  A leader needs to make clear their plans and message and tie it into others' hopes and dreams.  Without this you won't have followers.

Inspirational - As a leader you need to be positive and excited about your vision.  Your enthusiasm will show when asking others to get onboard with you.  The more positive you are the more effort others will put out to help your cause.

Competency - You need to show that you are capable of getting things done.  Your followers want to know that you will make good on your promises and are willing to learn new things right along side your followers.

These leadership characteristics have stood the test of time.  Other qualities are important, but these seem to be the most significant.
